Innovative New Product for
an Old Reoccurring Problem:
What do you do with the
existing switchboard meter when it breaks or just needs replacing?

A maintenance supervisor looks at an old switchboard
wondering how he can put another breaker in the existing panel. Will the
panel withstand the extra load capacity. A glance at the old mechanical
meter reveals a long lasting problem. The maintenance supervisor knows
the panel meter hasn't worked in years. He doesn't trust it. However, he
ponders the question. If I only knew this panel's capacity in kVA or kW, I
could make a quick determination of the existing load and what the panel
can hold. I wonder how much it will cost to fix this meter? Do I want to
replace it with a new solid state meter or just get by with a new solid
state meter or just get by with the existing meter configuration? I have 4
of these switchboards. Do I need to stock four different types of meter
configurations, one for each board. Is there a universal type retrofit kit
to replace all four switchboard meters with a single panel adapter?
Yes, SUSI Adapters has the family of Panel
Adapters that converts any standard socket meter into a small case
switchboard meter, there by eliminating the need to stock or maintain more
than one type of metering package thus reducing the ongoing maintenance
costs and lowering the initial metering costs by eliminating the expensive
adder for switchboard meters. It is designed to replace existing large
case switchboard metering equipment as well. The installation requires no
changes to the substation steel panel or its existing cut-out. This
adapter with a socket meter becomes a retrofit kit that is capable of
replacing manufacturers' metering equipment for panel mounting.
The Panel Adapters are versatile in all applications. They are perfect for
retrofitting an existing switchboard meter or for new installations.
They are designed to take the place of an original panel meter. The panel
adapters are a fit for switchboard manufactures such as GE, Westinghouse/ ABB, Simiens, and other manufactures. The original switchboard meters
required a lot of maintenance and parts just to keep them functional.
Usually, when the panel meters failed, they were never repaired. It was
not cost effective to manage inventory on multiple types of metering
systems. Most site have at least two different manufactory switchboards
which require inventory for least two different meters.

Surface Mount Adapter w/ Socket Meter |
The process for installing the panel adapter is relatively simple. Just
remove the old meter the existing switchboard, and replace it with the
Panel Adapter and socket meter. There is no cut or drilling needed.
The Panel Adapter are designed and manufacture to fit into meter
configuration for G E Schlumberger, PSI or Seimens, Trandata, Scientific
Columbus Jem Series and Landys & Gyr (small or large case). At this point,
one of the three Panel Adapter versions (Surface Mount, Flush Mount Front
Removal and Flush Mount) must be chosen depending on what is most
important. If you want the meter flush with the panel, the flush mount
adapter is the one to order. With the mount panel adapter, the meter can
be installed and removed from the front if the panel cutout is large
enough for meter, you may prefer the meter sticking out a few inches and
the surface mount type is the one you want. The advantage of the surface
mount version is the flexibility. It is the easiest version for changing
the meter, so switching to the meter to another type or another
manufacturer is no problem. The surface mount} version is the smallest and
will not cause any clearance problems. Using four bolts, mount the
Panel Adapter to the Panel and connect the wires to the terminal block on
the back of the Adapter.
With the Panel Adapter installed, a socket meter of choice is ready to
be plugged in. This completes the installation of the panel adapter with a
socket meter.

The complete family of Panel Adapters can provide the utility or its
customer a billing grade socket meter in virtually all switchboard
applications. They are easy to install, reduce inventory and maintenance problems and
save money. Wayne Smith of Georgia Power Company put it this way, "Hot
dog, it is a very innovative approach to switchgear metering."
